The Romance of Vagues

Christopher Van Epps 2. Andrews represents the best of what I call the Zappa Element, that thing you hear in music that speaks to your inner-musician with equal parts force and grace. Unlike Zappa, who always seemed to me to be showing off a little, Andrews is more concerned about evoking a feeling.

And what is that feeling? Nostalgia without sentimentality. It's a very tricky wire on which to perform a two-step but I think he does it well.

Take Electricien Mechant (please!). It's a boozy-sounding... Favorite track: Electricien Mechant.

about

Written, played and recorded by Ethan Andrews in Brooklyn, NY in the late 1990s, possibly direct to hard disk and mostly distributed by cassette. The name is a play on the French for "waves," and the songs sip mightily from the fountain of youth as it percolated up through the oil soaked ground of Greenpoint around that time. All colored in ardor and sadness, there's some very lovely stuff here. At least one song was sung with a mouth full of AA batteries (not recommended).

Looks good in a coonskin cap, but then you can't just wear one of those all the time without having to answer a lot of questions.
